Next Week Today (8/29 – 9/4)

Next Week Today is a selection of our picks from the upcoming week’s events, published every Sunday at 11 a.m. We’ll give you juuuuuust enough detail to whet your whistle, and then let you do the digging. In other words, these are the events we recommend giving a second, perhaps even third glance as you wend your way along the path to entertainment.

It’s a light week this week (thank goodness, since many of us probably spent the previous weekend Sidewalking). That said, some gems here, so take a gander.

MONDAYAugust 29

The Moth: StorySLAM (Happy) (Red Mountain Theatre, 7:30 p.m.) — The Moth returns to Red Mountain Theatre with another StorySLAM event (anyone can share a five-minute story on the evening’s theme — this time it’s “happy.”) Got a tale of joy you want to share with others? Give the stage a go and tell the world your story. Or if public speaking isn’t your thing, come for the stories of others.

THURSDAYSeptember 1

Spaceface / Seriously (Avondale Brewing Company, 8 p.m.) — Memphis-slash-L.A.-based “retro futurist dream rock” band Spaceface are playing a show at The Upstairs, Avondale Brewing’s intimate inside stage. Their vibe is joyful and their execution is excellent. New-wave opening act Seriously is on the Earth Libraries roster, and are worth showing up early for, no doubt.

Bohannons / Yes Trespassing / Terry Ohms (Saturn, 8 p.m.) — This whole lineup is great, but get there early for Terry Ohms, the alter-ego of Wes McDonald, he of Vulture Whale, The Ohms and People Years, among others. As Terry, Wes is one prolific dude, with his 10th album and second album of the year already out on his Birmingham-based label Cornelius Chapel Records.

FRIDAYSeptember 2

Carver Commodore / Juco / Zoo Culture (Saturn, 8:30 p.m.) — Florence, AL band Carver Commodore are bunches of high-energy rock ‘n’ roll good-times, wrapped up in crunchy layers of driving beat. They’re home-grown, but they’ve made plenty of inroads on the national scene, including Chicago’s Audiotree Live. The band has said they’re bringing a bunch of new material to this show, so fans of the band should be in for a treat.

SATURDAYSeptember 3

Cahaba Night Bazaar (Cahaba Brewing Company, 5 p.m.) — Over 40 vendors will be taking over the brewery for the latest edition of the Cahaba Night Bazaar. Get your shop on and fill your energy tank with grub from on-site food trucks while listening to a bevy of live music from the likes of Cody Howell, Jason Grubbs & Will Cash, Moral Support and Dave Kurland.

SUNDAYSeptember 4

Goulash Comedy Presents: Kenny DeForest / Chris Ivey (Saturn, 8 p.m.) — Comedian Kenny DeForest has done stints with Comedy Central, Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Late Show with James Corden, among others, and was named one of Comedy Central’s “Comics to Watch.” His often anecdotal and disarmingly off-the cuff delivery is instantly relatable, plus he’s, you know, funny.
